The Savvy Sage of Sewing Stimulation

Kaiser Karl

For years, I’ve admired Karl Lagerfeld.  I knew he was talented and sharp and on the ball.  But the more I find out about him, the more admiring I am.  Yes, there’s all this folderol  around him and it looks like a dog-and-pony show, and it is most of the time.  Let’s face it…..someone who has to be announced to 21 departments when he arrives – every day – well that is a bit much.  And a guy who wears 20 or so rings?….huh?

But you know you’re willing to forgive all that when you stop to think about his real brilliance in designing…..and I’m not talking about the kind that underlings fawn over.  I’m talking about real brilliance.  Otherwise, why would he still be there today.  He’s abnormally practical for an artist, and yet a complete artisan in the creation of his works.  He has survived Grunge, bean counters, take-overs, 80’s opulence and through it all he’s made the jacket pertinent, applicable, and always age appropriate… of my fav New Yorker cartoons that describes just how durable Karl has made the jacket:

Here’s a wonderful video that shows his interpretation and philosophy @ Chanel and even though he is 80 y/o (egads!!!) he’s still going strong and just as pertinent as he was 10 or 20 years ago.

You’ll have to watch it a couple of times cause it’s dubbed and it goes fast, and then you’ll want to watch it again for the graphics and shots behind the dubbing!!!
