Giambattista Valli Spring 22 Couture

And yet another wonderful Spring/Summer 2022 couture show. For so many decades it’s been so discouraging to watch season after season, year after year of horrible-looking clothing. Suddenly here we have some shows that are actually showing (shhhhh – don’t tell anyone!) beautiful clothing!

This is the essence of couture to me. That bow is immaculately constructed, balanced and crafted. This takes the here-to-fore unmatched YSL Pink Bow dress, to new heights.

Another take on a bow dress and again masterfully crafted. When this moves, it’s obvious to see the profile and remember St. Laurent’s seven points of focus of a woman’s body – too many focused, looks like a tart, too little like a bag lady. This outfit manages that bridge between the too much and too little very well.

Another bow, another dress well done.

What makes the dress so right is also what makes this dress so dangerous. The bow, as in all these couture garments, is large. The largess is what makes the statement. But too large, it’s overpowering. Too small and it’s not a statement garment. The master can make it just the right size.

Not all were bows, but also had their own problems to solve. Imagine sewing with this fabric that has such beautiful but outlandish, three-dimensional features in the fabric. The 3-D pieces can not be caught in the seams or in other parts, yet the garment has to be sewn well. Also, notice my favorite raised waistline silhouette.

The pièce de résistance for the finale – I am so tempted to make this. It has a tailored classic look with ruffles that are not as frou-frou as you might suspect. It’s the beautiful sleek look with the ruffle as the added surprise. I don’t have enough time to do this, but there will be an occasion – OK it might be my funeral, but there will be an occasion where I use part of this design.
